A question for those of the American persuasion

In the children's library I'm currently working in, we have small exhibits of various stuff - currently a small part of a collection of Kinder Egg things. Yesterday the collectors themselves were present - to answer questions and hand out chocolate - and they mentioned something very strange. Tell me, can it really be true that there are no Kinder Eggs in the US? That they are, in fact, illegal over there?

Huh, I'd never even heard of these things before reading this, but yes, it's illegal to sell food with non-food things imbedded in them. Probably too much danger of children choking on them, since children here don't expect sweets to contain toys.

That's just because you poor, sheltered Americans have never been bombarded with poorly synchronized commercials telling you that "but that's three things at once!" I very much doubt any kids around here getting a Kinder Egg doesn't know what to expect. Besides, while the actual toys are small enough to choke on, then the yellow plastic egg they're kept in definitely isn't...

True as far as I know. I used to bring 'em back by the case before Lars and I moved to DK. The only place I've ever seen them stateside was in a European-food-import shop.

It's very sad that there are no Kinder Eggs here. We did get some from a little Bosnian (at least I think it was Bosnian) shop in Phoenix when we were out there, and my mom gave me one for my birthday, but one of my nieces got a hold of it. =( We found the foil wrapper on the floor later, and nobody would take responsibility for it.
