A thought about Loki

So, in the post-credit scene it's revealed that the one giving Loki an army and a magic staff is Thanos - a very not nice guy, to say the least. But where did he get the army? And for that matter, why is Loki working for Thanos?

And it occurred to me - that staff. The mind-control staff. Does it work on Jotun/Asgardians? Because if it does...

Well, if it does work on a Jotun, who's to say that Thanos didn't poke Loki with it before handing it over? Maybe the first thing Thanos did when encountering the lost godling was to poke him. Meaning there is a possibility that Loki (and for that matter the Chitauri army, because why exactly are they obeying Thanos?) is less the villain and more just another victim of the real villain, just as surely as Hawkeye and Selvig (I need to rewatch Avengers and keep my eyes open for clues, don't I?)
