I've read two other series by the author now, and there are definite similarities in format: POV female is generally underappreciated if not actively disliked for various unattractive personality traits (constant vapid chirpiness for Sookie, stubborn bolshiness for Aurora Teagarden, various neuroses for Harper Connelly), but thanks to being inside her head the reader - and a small number of other characters - can see her genuine worth, and so understand and empathise. (Sookie effectively has a moderately severe mental handicap and has to struggle constantly to pay the bills: this aspect is played down in the series.) I have never failed to enjoy CH's books, largely because they don't seem to take themselves too seriously and so are a lot of fun. I don't think book-Sookie is a promising character to hang an interesting show on, though, so I'm glad the show is broadening out the way it has.
