It really sucks coming down with a bout of full-scale fangirlism for something nobody else seems to have even heard of :-(

I feel your pain. I've got this Jack Davenport fangirlism going on, and absolutely nobody in my rl has even heard of him. At least there's this small community on LJ that appreciates him.

So what is your latest obsession?

Oh, just an urban fantasy tv series about Norse gods from New Zealand... which is awesome, but there is absolutely no fanfic or fanvids or anything, and there won't be a new season until sometime next year *cries*

Here, have a trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bd80D347iSI

Obviously the only thing you can do about it is make a summary/synopsis post (with pictures) about why he's awesome and everything he's in.

A lot of pictures.

And then download links.

And then make a fic comm.

...

yeaaaah.

Very cool! Looks interesting, funny and sexy. Too bad we don't have access to it here in the U.S. Hopefully (for your sake :) it will be distributed more widely eventually and you'll get those fandoms out there.

It reminds me of a Neil Gaiman book I recently read called "American Gods," which I hear is being adapted as an HBO TV series.

From: [identity profile] oneiriad.livejournal.com

Well, you have as much access to it as I do - long live the internet (don't know how I ever lived without it, because if I had to settle for what I could have access to otherwise... let's not go there. Rant for another day). But actual broadcasting probably would up the chances of a fandom - of course, this being the US we're talking about, they'd probably wind up doing the traditional probably-crappy remake instead of just showing the bloody series...

It's not particularly like American Gods - for one thing, the characters are less weakened-gods-being-sneaky-around-the-corners and more descendant/reincarnations with so many issues and problems and it is awesome, but, for urban fantasy, the fantasy bit is actually pretty downplayed a lot of the time.

about why he's awesome
Uhm, actually more of a tv series - and summaries would just be spoilery for too many things, since it's pretty short :-(

Besides, there's already a website with pictures and synopsis: http://thealmightyjohnsons.co.nz/ and there are trailers and stuff: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bd80D347iSI . And and appalling lack of fandom :-(

From: [identity profile] etothepii.livejournal.com

I wasn't being facetious.

I've seen pimpage posts for shows and felt that they're usually pretty good for bringing new people into the fandom, since it gives people reasons to watch the show while also giving them someone to be fannish with. If you can get some small amount of people excited and get people to start writing for it too, that itself can be a draw as well.

:-(

if no one tries to start a fandom for it, it's not going to happen

From: [identity profile] oneiriad.livejournal.com

Yeah, I know, but mostly, the kind of pimpage posts I've seen for shows and similar, they usually have at least a fic or two or a fanvid or something to link to to get people hooked, besides the canon itself. And I don't seem to have any ideas for a fanfic, not even a crossover...

From: [identity profile] etothepii.livejournal.com

Meh, idk then.

Run a first draft in your friends list and flock it and include download links? Start a kink meme?

If you can't think of any prompt ideas for it, maybe it's just not prone to fandom? I know a few shows that are like that, where they're great and all but not very good for fandoms.

How about a picspam?

From: [identity profile] oneiriad.livejournal.com

On the contrary, I can't help but feel that fandom would be all over this - it has all the ingredients, so to speak. And I can think of prompt ideas (admittedly, mostly involving crossover this-person-meeting-that-person), it's just, I can't think of any I would like to write. Feel that I can write. At least, not yet. Maybe they'll come. Of course, it doesn't help that my preferred random-crossover-canon at present is Supernatural and the two canons don't exactly mix, so...

I think I'll sleep on it.

Why have I not HEARD OF THIS!!?!?!

This looks like hilarious fun -- also, Thor is 'barking mad', and the goddesses are kicking the gods are the block. This is exactly what I want.

Also, I'm amused that the characters are mostly the gods of fairly unimpressive things, like Sports. No God of Biscuits, hmm? :D

From: [identity profile] oneiriad.livejournal.com

Don't knock Ull - being god of games means always winning games - all sorts of games. Actually a power with lots of potential, if you want it to be.

And no gods of biscuits (I don't think the old norse had biscuits), but one of the goddesses is Fulla, handmaiden of Frigg. Which is sort of depressing, really.

From: [identity profile] neotoma.livejournal.com

Wasn't Ull the god of skiing in the original stories? And Thor's stepson?

Sorry, 'god of biscuits' is from an Eddie Izzard comedy routine.

Given that the Norse goddesses get so much less verbiage in the Eddas, I really want to see what this show did with them.

From: [identity profile] oneiriad.livejournal.com

According to Snorri, Ull is god of skiing and hunting, and supposedly also the guy you want on your side in competitions - god of games is a pretty decent modern way of putting it, actually. (Admittedly, none of the old lists are really that straightforward about it - they don't say god of this and goddess of that in most cases, but still, the series manages quite well). And Thor's stepson, yes, according to Snorri Sif is his mother - though, as the gods in this series is strictly speaking descendants/reincarnations, the old family relationships doesn't really apply.

Oh, Eddie Izzard is fun. I must have missed that one :-(
