There was - well, I don't remember the exact line spoken, but there was something Steve said at one point that bothered me. When he was arguing with Tony, telling him that they were soldiers, that they shouldn't question their superiors, should follow orders. I wish I could remember the exact line, but anyway, it bothered me - and then it occurred to me that Captain America, the great hero who fought the Nazis - that he might not know. Or at least, he might not get it, on the same level as a person born and raised later. That he might not get why the thought of blindly following orders might make someone flinch.

Because the thing is, depending on exactly when he took his dive - he might have missed out on a little thing called the Holocaust. Because while there were rumours and suchlike leaking back to the American people, it was mostly discounted as vile propaganda like the stuff said about the Germans during WWI. The government, the people making the decisions might have known more - but the common people, the soldiers - and I sort of doubt that the soldier leading the brave fight against an entirely different sub-group would have been considered someone who needed to know - the common people didn't know until the camps started getting liberated - the Russians got some in 1944, but the Americans didn't until 1945, when they hit Dachau, when they saw.

And the thing is, like I said, depending on exactly when Steve went into the ice - he might not have known. He might have gone down before the camps became common knowledge, he most certainly didn't stick around long enough to catch the Nürenberg trials. "Just following orders" might be a cultural reference as obscure to him as, well, flying monkeys are to Thor. Even if he has been briefed about the end of the WWII, about the Holocaust - even so, it won't be ingrained in him, not in the same way.

Which I suppose is how come the great hero of the WWII can stand and earnestly advocate that they should do as they're told (fortunately, he then proceeds to do some investigating into the mysterious SHIELD secrets himself, but still - that exchange still bothered me).

And - I'm probably reading far too much into an exchange I can't even remember exactly...
