Two thoughts and a meme - just because

Thought the first: I think I'll wait a few weeks before trying to track down some horse - judging by some articles I've been reading, I'm hardly the only one to react in the "I'd sort of like to try that" way, apparently.

Thought the second: In Supernatural, I wonder when we're going to get to see the Men of Letters' actual library. I mean, it's a nice enough reading room, but the librarian in me would like to see the actual library. Speaking of the Men of Letters, I have a theory that they aren't quite as ancient as Henry made it sound - the name, the "we are scholars, not barbarian hunters", the apparent lack of religious affiliations - all speak to me of Enlightenment. Add the so far very American focus and American headquarters and I suspect a secret society formed sometime around the American Revolution, possibly as a splinter group of something older. Anyway...

I can see where the Men of Letters is a secret society from the Enlighthment. The point that they aren't overtly religious, though they do have the silly robes, levels, and rituals, makes me think that they evolved from an alchemical society, maybe?

Actually, the silly robes, the levels, the ancient, secret knowledge? Most of us would just call that freemasonry. Maybe the MoL evolved alongside (or from) the Freemasons and the Rosicrucians, drawing on the same roots - roots, which in the world of Spn might actually be ancient, secret, magical mysteries and lore.
