First of all, dear Yuletide Writer: Thank You! Thank you for being an awesome person offering awesome fandoms and thank you for being willing to write a story for me. Thank you :-)
To start with, I've got a couple of lists of general likes and dislikes in fic. Just to get that part out of the way:
Things I generally like in fic: slash and gen; plot; snark; fluff; happy endings; awesome characters being awesome; crack; twisty plots; surprises.
Dislikes & squicks: non-con; a/b/o, seme/uke, sub/dom and any and all similar power dynamic tropes; very kinky sex (heavy bdsm, watersport, etc.); anachronisms; underage; kidfic; bestiality; mpreg; pwp; genderswap; incest; OC love interests; full-scale AUs (you know, like high school or coffee shop?).
If you are the sort who like to stalk your yuletide victim, you will mostly find me on my tumblr these days. If you have any questions, doubts, anything, you are quite welcome to stalk me or leave anonymous asks over there.
Right, let's get on to the actual prompts, shall we?
Himmelskibet | A Trip to Mars (1918)
Any
This is an essentially very optimistic movie and perversely this is giving me a desire for stories of a slightly darker bent. Perhaps a sequel where the friendly Martians turn out to be less friendly and more mind-controlling expansionists? Or just really creepy looking and hiding behind glamours? Or let them be genuine, 100% peace-loving, hippy Martians - how does the world react to that? Does it eagerly accept such a message in the years after the Great War, making Marya a leader figure? Or do things take a darker turn?
I suppose this is the closest I have to a 5 minute fandom - I mean, it's somewhat longer than that, but on the other hand, it's available at Filmstriben and on Youtube, if you feel like watching the world's oldest full length science fiction movie, which is awesome (also, the Danish versions of the Martian names for things are marvellous and melodramatic and awesome - ahem) and very melodramatic and full of people in way too much eyeliner and hippies on Mars and the hero holding the heroine's breasts for a frankly embarrassing space of time. Right.
If the whole dark thing isn't to your taste, well, tell me about Avanti and Marya - they are married now. Awesome. But how does that go? How does Marya adjust to life on Earth, where people routinely eat meat and kill each other and basically do things that must seem horrible to hear? How does Avanti cope with having a wife as strange as Marya? Does he end up in her shadow as she spreads her message? Are the happy couple the target of bigotry for being essentially two different species? Or just married life hijinks, because you know there'll be some many misunderstandings and mixed expectations along the way. Or tell me about David Dane - perhaps he chose to stay on Mars? How does that go? Or perhaps he goes back home to America to spread Marya's message? How does that turn out? Or the sadly nameless Asian crewmember - tell me about him? Why did he go on the expedition, where's he from, how does he react to the Martian culture, does he go back home to spread Marya's message? For that matter - what's his name? (It annoys me that he's nameless - far more than it annoys me that he's played by a very white person, because the movie is from 1918, so I can forgive the casting choices far easier than the lack of giving the character a bloody name).
Travel Light - Naomi Mitchison
Halla
For this, give me all the Halla fic. Because Halla is awesome. Write me post-canon fic: is she an actual valkyrie now? How does her first "collection" go, considering her opinions about heroes? Or write me friendship fic with Steinvor. Or Halla going on adventures - travelling light, perhaps in search of the dragons that must surely still be out there? Going to China, Japan, maybe the Americas? Or travelling lightly through the centuries, seeing the world change. Perhaps she acquires new nicknames along the way? Just write me Halla. Please?
I do adore this book. For those who haven't read it, it's an older fantasy novel about Halla, who as a child is saved from her evil stepmother by her Finnish nurse, who can conveniently turn into a bear (because apparently all Finns can do that), and later she's adopted by a dragon. It's a lovely, not particularly long novel, featuring dragons, valkyries, Halla going on adventures and repeatedly saving the day through such feats as fixing horseraces in Constantinopel and running into burning buildings in the land of the Rus and in general being awesome. Because she is. Also, it's entirely possible that I read her as asexual - which I'm mostly telling you as a way to let you know that I'm not really interested in shipfic for this fandom, though if you must, well, there's always Steinvor? But really, I am mostly interested in Halla being awesome fic. Because she is.
Vikings (TV)
Athelstan, Rollo
I would very much like a story about the relationship between Athelstan and Rollo, either actual Athelstan/Rollo (consensual, please) or merely fic exploring a friendship or familial relationship. I know they have very little canon interaction, and yet - Athelstan straight-up tells Rollo in season two that he considers him family. Tell me about that? How does Rollo - who clearly cares about his family, even if he occasionally do monumentally idiotic things (considering how Ragnar sometimes does the same, I'm assuming its genetic) - how does he react to this strange addition to his family circle. Give me some missing scenes from all the long time skips. Maybe there was a time shortly after Ragnar became Earl when some other Northmen thought it was okay to push this particular slave around and hurt him and Rollo was the one to stop them? Maybe, after Rollo's baptism, he sought out Athelstan to learn more about this god that he might have offended, because clearly some god must be mad at the lot of them? Maybe - after the inevitable snake pit - Athelstan will go to live with Rollo in Normandy?
If you, dear writer, don't find yourself inspired by this, the implicit AND of the request becomes an OR. Tell me a tale about either Rollo or Athelstan. Tell me about Rollo - and yeah, he's an arsehole at times, but let's be frank - that's not the part that interests me about him. I am curious about his apparently being a berserker of some sort? An ulfhednar perhaps? Tell me about that. Or maybe about Rollo the uncle - I did adore how he was the one to ask Gyda about her weapons training. Or maybe a tale of him interacting with the Lord Aethelwulf that was brother of Aella, bonding over being the brothers of more powerful men. Or - considering those glimpses in the season three trailer - write me a fic shipping him with Ecbert's son Lord Aethelwulf.
Or write me a tale of Athelstan. Usually I ship the tiny viking with Ragnar, so that's always good - or you could write me the AU where he said yes when Ragnar and Lagertha propositioned him. Or how about Athelstan exploring the cultural aspects of the Norse - maybe learning runes, from either Ragnar or Floki. Or friendship fic - with Torstein, because Torstein is awesome and adorable, or with Floki, because they seemed friendly in season one and Athelstan seems so genuinely hurt by Floki's behaviour in season two.
If you're still not inspired, well, I am also quite fond of Lord Aethelwulf and Lord Aethelwulf - and would quite love a story where one of them ended up captured and taken back to Kattegat - to see someone other than Athelstan react to the Viking homelands. Or you could write me a crossover with Sons of Anarchy, with our favourite vikings accidentally time travelling to the 21st century and hanging out with bikers? Or...
