Went to see Tordenskjold & Kold, the new Danish historical movie about our greatest naval hero - and like the other Tordenskjold movie I’ve seen, he never gets to do any actual naval heroing.

Which, admittedly, is very much the point of the movie - the war hero doing crappily in peace time, and how war has fucked up everybody too involved in it. It’s beautiful with scenery and costumes (I want gifsets), and quite deliberately anachronistic with its dialogue and various intertextual bits and pieces - Dr Mabuse the way-before-his-time psychologist, anyone? Not to mention playing with the entire conspiracy theory surrounding Tordenskjold’s death by duel.

There’s Jakob Oftebro, of course, pretty and often drunk and fucked up - and he doesn’t quite rock that dress. And I really could have lived without the rape scene. Or they could have warned you. At least he did get a dog? Poor Peter Wessel. Can I hug him yet?

Anyway, I think people might be disappointed if they come looking for a straightforward historical movie. That’s not this. This is - this is a tragical comedy - or comical tragedy - and a bit a roadmovie - set in a mostly realistic historical setting. But I kinda like it..
