Being about 50 pages short of having finished The System of the World, I have this to say: I like Jack Shaftoe. A lot. Young, middleaged, old (well, relatively) - I like him. And now I will go and have a go at trying to finish the book, so I can come back to the internet and try to remember what that community for crossovers between Neal Stephenson's trilogy and PotC is called (and hopefully someone will have written some nice Jack-meets-Jack somewhere)...
