You know, I was sympathetic with Ungdomshuset. Not flag-waving or demonstrating, but I thought the politicians shouldn't have sold it in the first place, that there should be a place for that group too. Not that everybody hasn't been acting like idiots in this story, both the politicians and the youths and Faderhuset. But I was a little sympathetic and mostly steared clear of the whole matter.

The last couple of days, my sympathy has been fading. I don't care how right your cause might be, you don't go rioting in the streets, you don't throw bricks at police who are simply trying to do their job. And then this morning - they - the protestors - they wrecked a library. Admittedly only the library of a gymnasium, but still. In the news it said that they burned books.

I'm sorry, Ungdomshuset, but I just lost any and all sympathy I might ever have had for you. Some things are just not done.

I agree. I might think that in the beginning, that Ungdomshuset had a cause - but the actions they've taken just makes me wonder why anyone would want to hand something over to them.

They were offered another house, and the money to pay for it, if I understood correctly, and they turned it down. My sympathy went out the window about there. That's when it seemed to me that they just wanted a cause to riot about anything. They could have taken an easy way out, and made people want to cooperate with them at a later stage... but they didn't.

The recent riots are too over the top. It is possible to demonstrate without throwing bricks, or starting fires. The police are doing their job.

I was mildly freaked out Saturday night when I heard on the news about what happened. (I guess it would have actually been Sunday morning for you at that point.)

...And I'm still somewhat freaked out. If the Wikipedia entry is correct, the place has also been known as "The People's House." ...And unless there is more than one building by that name, I have been there.

And my overwhelming reaction to this is, holy crap! Going with the assumption that it is the same place, I'm kind of in shock here. I haven't talked to [livejournal.com profile] freso in ages. This whole thing makes me vaguely worried about him.

Actually, Sunday morning was when it began cooling down, after having been going strong with riots and such since the house was cleared Thursday morning - with the police coming in a helicopter raid that in the news looked like something out of an American movie...

Alright, first, while it is true, that The Youth House used to be called The People's House, then that name is actually claimed by several buildings, including at least one other in Copenhagen. If you've been in the actual Youth House, it should have been easily recognisable considering the huge amounts of graffiti decorating it. Still, it's a bit weird to think about, I'll admit.

Second of all, I wouldn't worry too much about [livejournal.com profile] freso. If he is involved with the Youth House and has been out demonstrating, well, it's possible that he has been arrested. The police is working pretty hard, having arrested more than 600 people during the riots and having to get them through the whole before-a-judge-within-24-hours thing, but nobody has been killed or seriously injured according to the news. I'm sure he's just fine.
