You should have told me. Well, at least I finally know what to use the Amazon gift card I got for my birthday for...

Caine, Rachel: Ill wind
Hmmm. Maybe. Will try one more book in the series before deciding whether to go for the lot of them or drop it. I have to many books to read anyway...

Science fiction short stories. Some good, some not. Mind you, the ballet-dancing three-legged aliens story was fun. And the parallel world Denmark accessed through experimental druguse.
*tilts head, considering* Hmmmm.

Leiber, Fritz: The big time
You know what the problem with old science fiction? It's not there isn't awesome science fiction stuff, it's that even when you can see that it might be trying to be progessive and stuff, offering you a fierce woman soldier and sex therapi and such like, then it still ends up feeling so, well, old-fashioned, and occasionally kind of creepy - and I'm not even talking about the Great Politics Mess Up produced nazis. I mean, the story is perfectly fine, even if I very quickly developed a dislike for the narrator, but, well, anyway...

Rice, Anne: Christ the lord - the road to Cana
I probably should stop reading AR, shouldn't I? It's just, I keep hoping for her to find her way back from crazy religion land. Mind you, she still manages to pull of a decent historical novel feel and putting the bits of canon together in a way that makes some sense, even if the main character is quite frankly boring. Of course, historical novels was always the lady's strong side, whether she's filling them with castratos, ghosts, vampires or sons of man.

Sagara, Michelle:  Cast in shadow
Interesting world. Kind of seen it before with the story - young woman with mysterious potential etc. in fantasy universe etc. - but it's a promising start. I'm a little disappointed they didn't actually play more with the potential for a fantasy mystery novel, but maybe the next books in the series will delve into that?

Solanas, Valerie: SCUM manifesto
Surprisingly funny,this modest proposal. Not extremely funny, but funny.

I *love* the Vorkosigan books :) The prequels are worth reading as well.

And now I can rec you my favorite piece of fanfiction on the web: 'A Deeper Season' which takes place several years down the road. It's Miles/Gregor and feels almost identical to canon. Seriously wonderful, long, complicated and romantic.

Take one Miles, a hapless cousin, Cetagandan social politics, a galactic conspiracy, a scientific discovery, a lot of firepower, and an unexpected declaration. Mix well and step back quickly.

You know, I've read the one book. And now you're dangling fanfic in front of me and that's not fair. That's not fair at all. Now I'm going to know there's fanfic out there wanting to be read and I can't read it before I've read the books and and and...

I read A Deeper Season after I'd read only two of the Miles books and I was fine. Of course then I dragged my feet on reading the rest of the books because the story had become like canon to me and I didn't want to see it contradicted :)

Right, so, finally finished reading Diplomatic Immunity and - uhm, about A Deeper Season. Are we entirely sure Mistress Bujold hasn't got herself a secret fanfic habit? Cause this reads a lot like the books. As in, perhaps more than most book-fandom fanfic I've come across. Or am I just being silly?

Although I'd like to say I'm glad I read the whole series before diving into the fanfic. It's kind of nice actually knowing who the whole gallery of people in the story is, you know?

It *does* read like the books although some of the author's other fiction *doesn't* so.....who knows.

I've finally finished all the books as well. None of them were as good as 'The Warrior's Apprentice,' although I love 'Ethan of Athos' :)
