I'm seriously considering leaving Folkekirken. I'm an atheist, but that's not the reason - I've not really minded, because I tend to think of it mostly along the lines of tradition and culture and oh so pretty, pretty churches and that I don't mind supporting. The fact that Folkekirken's approach to religion is quite possibly in the top ten most bland such in the world, well, that helps. (also, the local church tax is among the lower in the country)
It's just - a few weeks ago, our new Minister of the Church (did I mention that Folkekirken is a genuine state church? with about 80% of the population as members? in one of the least religious countries in the world?) announced that gay people are finally going to be able to marry in church, rather than just getting registered partnerships. Yay! Except suddenly all the media was full of priests bitching that they won't marry gay people, it's against the Bible - you know, basically acting like so many Bible Belt Americans.
And the thing is - I know that Folkekirken has a tendency to be more conservative than the country in general, I know that. It's just... why should I give my money to this organization? Why should I support an organization so fucked up that it fails to understand, that when an employee are being a homophobic idiot and discriminating against, well, anybody, then the correct response is to tell them to do their damn job or get fired, not to coddle them and tell them that of course they are allowed to cling to a moral belief that is the direct opposite of the moral generally considered acceptable in society in general? (And it doesn't exactly help matters that priests have an unfortunate tendency to act as if they have some magical insight that makes them particularly suited for ethical debates - yeah, right.) Imagine if, say, the older generations of police tried to pull the same stunt, acting according to no-longer-current or even downright amoral morals? Imagine that and stop making excuses for the idiots - if they won't do their jobs, let them quit and go work for Inner Mission or something...
Right. Pardon my ranting. *goes off to study webpages for instructions*
