Rig! (What - I like my myths... even if it's just Lagertha cheerfully using them for political purposes).
Awww, Ragnar saying hello to the shy little princeling.
I think I could have lived without the table manners scene...
I just randomly love that, while Lagertha is staying at home, Ragnar's raiding party includes other shield maidens. :-)
I rather enjoyed this episode, the raid plotline - Ragnar being clever and provocative and dangerously efficient (it's a bad idea to assume that just because they are barbarians (and yeah, the Vikings kinda were), they'll be stupid barbarians).
I'm glad the old Viking got his death in combat. Let's hope he goes to Valhalla and doesn't end up like poor Biorn.
I rather liked Lord Athelwulf (is that the spelling?) and I was sorry to see him die so soon. Dammit, Aelle - it's all well and good to call a bluff when it is a bluff, but honestly, did you think Ragnar was bluffing??? Dammit. (I randomly loved how Ragnar kept touching Athelwulf - is he this tactile with all his captives, I wonder?)
I liked Rollo getting baptised - not for belief, but for expediency. I mean, it's fairly realistic - when the Christian rulers started bribing Vikings with land (conveniently creating buffer zones for themselves at the same time), baptism was usually a requirement. And I remember reading the comic book version of Röde Orm (yes, I really should read the actual book), which has a bunch of Vikings travelling far and wide and mostly tackling religion as a matter of "when in Rome"...
Admittedly, that's also what makes me less than happy about Floki's reaction - oh, it's pretty clear he's connected to the gods and takes them even more seriously than the rest. Still, wouldn't Odin appreciate the jest? Or Loki? Making fun of the Christians by pretending to follow them? Ah well, let's have ourselves a clash of religion, shall we.
Of course, if Rollo's baptism has so much effect, I wouldn't be surprised if he's going to, ahem - borrow Athelstan for a while, once they get home. Find out what he's gotten himself into. (If the Norse gods are pissed at him, maybe he can try to gain favour with this new god? Oh dear, and now I sort of want to see a somewhat freaked out Athelstan with Rollo the first convert, just because (Rollo's first confession, anyone?) - though judging by the preview for next week, that doesn't seem likely...)
Lagertha's miscarriage - you know, I worry. I mean, the preview shows her alive and well, so that's good. But I worry. Because yes, Ragnar Lothbrok had many sons - but with his second wife. Kraka. The story of how she becomes his wife is one of the central ones about him - fashionable fishnets and all. And I worry for Lagertha, because Ragnar seems to be too in love with her to just dump her (though what if her miscarriage is more - what if she cannot have any more children?). I worry. Partly because Ragnar is going to need those sons, so he can be avenged when Aelle finally gets to throw him into that pit...
About the trailer: Athelstan, what have you done to your hair?!!* Also, don't let them sacrifice Athelstan. Don't let them sacrifice Athelstan. I repeat, don't let them sacrifice Athelstan. *meep*
I hope there'll be some more Ragnar/Athelstan/Lagertha interaction next episode - after episode three, it's been sad how little the show has given us. Oh, a conversation or two every episode, mostly between Ragnar and Athelstan (though it was nice to see Athelstan as Lagertha's advisor in this), but compared to episode three - come on, already? Bad show, teasing a canon OT3 and not delivering (hope springs eternal?)
*Mind you, Athelstan letting his hair grow is promising as far as the not-a-slave bit, since thralls were easily recognized by their short hair and metal collars. Admittedly, we've never seen Athelstan wear a collar... I take my hopes where I can get them, alright?
