It doesn't help that searching for "Vikings" has a tendency to bring up loads and loads of stuff, not much of it really relevant (damn American football teams and their naming traditions, yes?).
Anyway, I have found Vikings fanvids - mostly on Youtube - just not yet any that I would call an unconditional rec. There seems to be a bit too much fondness for colour filters in this fandom, a tendency to have canon speech in the middle of an otherwise decent vid, lack of creativity (I count at least three vids so far using the series intro song), stuff like that. I dunno, maybe I just have developed embarrassingly high standards for fanvids?* Of course, it doesn't help that it's only a 9 episode season and even some of the major characters don't have that much screentime (not that a short canon is in itself an excuse - just look at all the amazing movie fanvids out there, or series like Sherlock).
In any case**, I haven't got any uncondonitional recs. I do have a few conditional ones***.
I Belong With You for all the (extended) family feels. Recommended for dealing with episode 8 & 9 induced trauma.
Wayfaring Stranger, a very nice Athelstan vid that mostly suffers from having only ep. 2 & 3 material to work with.
Bedroom Hymns - an OT3 vid, which seems to be rare. Ragnar/Athelstan vids are already relatively common (and pretty much all of them use the same clips), but there's not nearly enough OT3 in the vid part of this fandom. The editing isn't perfect, but I find myself liking it anyway.
Breath of Life, which is too short, but works quite well as a trailer-style vid. The same goes for Welcome to the new age, except that one would be considerably improved if the vidder hadn't stuck a huge signature in the corner (and stayed away from the colour filters)...
In any case, dear flist, help me? Because I'm still searching for the Vikings fanvid that I won't just like, but love - have you any to point me at?

I think it's funny how the ones you seem to be most positive about are the ones I liked least? And the two last ones that you seem pretty meh about are the ones I like best.
I mean, they all suffer form youtubinitis, but what I kept thinking at Bedroom Hymns is how the vidder seems to have basically gone "this is a hot song. these are hot people. they should bang" and then slapped some images on top of the song. I feel like there are better ways to construct the "they should bang" argument, maybe when you don't have much source you need to actually investigate HOW these people are hot and awesome instead of just... that.
But I agree that the Athelstan vid is really nice, despite the fact that it's also mostly going "Athelstan is cool"!
I think Breath of Life is *really* cool actually -- and I don't think it's that trailer style-y? I actually think the vidder just wanted to use the credits footage, inconvenient text be damned. But I think it's obvious that this vidder actually knows how to edit TO a song, and I think the song choice is excellent; you can see that good ole fashioned ping-pong between song and images.
Welcome to the New Age is actually pretty awesome. I love that song, and I think the vidder is really trying and succeeding in ~saying something~ about Ragnar. And doing it on the beat.
So, yeah! Not a bad collection at all!

Bedroom Hymns - I like the song, but that's no reason to like a vid. Sadly, I suspect the main reason I like it is because it really is the only OT3 vid I've found - and yeah, it could have been done a lot better, and sadly, with every rewatch, the flaws stand out the clearer. I really hope a good vidder gets around to doing an OT3 vid at some point for this fandom.
Athelstan is cool! Like a bowtie! :-)
Well, I do like Breath of Life - and I meant trailer-style as that it could work as trailer, if you wanted to pimp the show? I just - I never know what to say about stuff, so sometimes I might come across as meh about something I'm not?
That said, I'm still waiting for the vid. Do you think it might tempt someone come Festivid time? (in the far-off, distant future).

But anyway, thanks so much for trawling youtube so I didn't have to ;P
And I do think it's pretty likely to be nominated for Festivids, actually! I mean, OT3, monks, vikings, hot people? Totally!

Festivids Vikings would be awesome. The general level of creativity in this fandom (including my own, sadly) seems to have almost ground to a halt post-series finale - admittedly, that episode, well, who can blame anyone? Sadly, I suspect the fandom already managed to outgrow the Yuletide stage... Ah well.

Anyway, the slowing of fanfic on AO3 and the fact that there's precious little on fanfiction.net might raise hopes for Yuletide Vikings - except I'm not going to nominate it. After last year, I am picking the three most obscure things I can find, just because. Though if somebody else gets a nomination through, I'll certainly offer to write it. I want to write Vikings, I do, I just - don't really have any ideas right now (except the ancient Viking vampires story that's slowly sprouting random scenes somewhere in the back of my head...)

Incidentally, it is actually a great wish of mine one day when I become a proficient vidder to make a vid to a Danish song and troll everyone so hard. Like, excessive literalisms or a sad-sounding song with an actually terrible meaning in context. I might be a bad person...

If I ever got into vidding - which I won't, because I sincerely doubt I'd have any talent for it - but if I did, I'd want to make a vid involving Danish movies and series - awesome women characters maybe? Or maybe that's just cause I want an excuse to share Baronessen på benzintanken with the world...
