So, there's been a lot of bitching from Danish farmers about how wolves are going to take their sheep and that the state should be giving them money if that happens (exactly what makes them so special compared to when a fox takes a chicken or a deer eats some crops, but I digress...)

Anyway, if the Danish sheep are anything like the Norwegian ones - well, the farmers can probably stop worrying.

Actually, more than just bitching, some people from the farmers' organizations hav actually turned into full-fledged conspiracy theoriests, claiming that the wolves haven't just come on their own (despite wolf populations in Germany and Poland being within easy running distance), oh no. No, they're saying someone actually went and fetched a couple of wolves (three is what the scientists are telling us we currently have).

Of course, the conspiracy theory is lacking an explanation of qui bono. In fact, from a motive point of view, the only people it would make sense for to go and collect wolves would actually be - farmers. Since they are now going to get money from the state if their sheep are killed by wolves. See, thing is, we haven't had wolves for a couple of centuries - but what we have had are dogs. Stupid people's fucking out-of-control dogs which have on occasion killed sheep - which no doubt in the future will kill more sheep.

Now, it's not that hard to imagine some farmer going: "Hmmm. In Germany they get money from the state if their sheep are killed by wolves. And wolves are awfully similar to dogs, right? So I go and fetch a wolf and next time some dog kills one of my sheep, all I have to do is cry wolf and voila! Money!" Of course, it's not going to be that easy, since there's going to be experts and DNA tests involved, but I still think it might be worthwhile checking when the last time those farmers that have been making public statements about wolves last took a trip south of the border. Don't you? ;-)
