I was catching up on tumblr and came across a reference - not a spoiler in the strictest sense of the word, I suppose - a reference to Athelstan, which made me wander off to google it. Apparently, Michael Hirst has talked about how Athelstan's character is actually inspired by some real life monks who got kidnapped by vikings back in the day* and well, let's just say those stories didn't exactly come with a happy ending, and I'm really hoping they're not going to go that way.
So now I'm sad. :-(
*The way Rollo is supposedly inspired by the first Duke of Normandy, nevermind the fact that the show starts in the year 793 AD and Rollo didn't get to be Duke until 912 AD. - but then, Vikings really deserves an entry on the anachronism stew page on tvtropes. I'm beginning to suspect MH of basically trying to squash all of the Viking Age into a few years of tv...
