First Athelstan-less episode since the very first :-(

Right - time difference. You know, taking account of the preview/credits parts, I don't think there is any. Huh.

What a tiny viking fleet. Wasn't it supposed to be huge? It doesn't even stretch across the entire river.

Count Odo. So this is definitely not the actual Ragnar Lothbrok Paris raid, but the Siege of 885-886 - except with added Rollo. Let's see Hirst continue to claim historical accuracy now.

Well, the Frankish king is certainly no Ecbert. But between Odo and Gisla, they might still have a decent shot. We'll see.

And so Ecbert finally admits his ambitions - though why he decided not to keep those handy Northman allies as a possibility is beyond me.

"I wonder how he is." Oh, Ecbert, if only you knew.

The bit where we've been told that Floki will regret killing Athelstan - much as I'd like to believe that he actually regrets murdering someone who was once a friend, I am more inclined to suspect that we'll be getting a case of "christian martyrs are a hell of a lot harder to get rid off than annoying living christians".

And now it looks like Floki's getting everything he ever wanted - Ragnar's attention, trust. Oh, please let Ragnar know who did what, please.

Oldest friend? Floki, he put a knife to your throat when the anchor wasn't delivered exactly on time?

Why do I get the feeling that Ragnar is setting Floki up for failure? As a lesson in his gods not being so very strong at all. Oh dear.

And now we've got two instances of the word viking. And curiously enough, in both cases, they are about females (yes, also Aslaug's sons, but still - Torvi calls herself Viking and Thorunn wants Siggy to be Viking - I wonder what we are supposed to understand by the word Viking in this series, at this point).

I really hope something nasty happens to that English bishop before the show is over. He disgusts me. At least let Ragnar find out who crucified his Athelstan and punish him for it.

Hey, somebody getting tattooed in the background!

Oh god, please no. Don't have Odo be the jealous, jilted suitor. What a boring plotline that will be.

You can just see it in Helga's face, her horror, her realization that her love has gone quite, quite mad - or was he always so?

*wanders off to google Roman poetry* Horace!

Someone's got herself an exotic menagerie. No wonder she wanted Northmen - they'd fit right in next to the parrots.

It occurs to me that Kwenthrith might not have poisoned the wine, but she might easily have laced it with an aphrodisiac - if she herself intended to benefit from it, surely she wouldn't mind suffering through it herself...

Oh my. Ragnar is just accumulating sons left and right. Or does he - clever Kwenthrith, methinks.

Nice visual, the viking army at night before Paris.

Is Floki quoting Völuspa? I think he is...
