So, I'm currently attending a series of after-work-lectures offered by the librarian union and the library school together. The previous three times it's been very information science theory heavy.

Today, it was a bit different. The man who wrote this book held a lecture on how the geek shall inherit the earth (well, the millennials shall take over public service and information industries when the bloody boomers finally retire, unless the government shuts the whole thing down before that, but you know, same difference). Which was basically what the book was about too, but this time it came with a powerpoint show with loads of geeky subcultures (fanfiction, roleplayers, cosplay, bronies, brogres????) and the history of Anonymous thrown in.

The thing, though, is that the rest of the people attending, well, I'm pretty sure most of them are older than me. And even the couple of women who I pegged as relatively close to my age (I suck at guessing ages), well, one of them mentioned how he was describing her kids. Like I said, I suck at guessing ages. But the thing is, it was very much an external description of what he calls the net generation, and then there were a few discuss amongst yourselves in groups questions, going along the lines of "imagine if you were the mentor having to integrate a member of this new generation at your workplace" and "how can you use the ressources of this new generation"* and I'm just a bit...

You know, I'm pretty sure I actually am part of "this new generation". I'm just young enough to qualify as a millennial, and I'm a nerd with nerdy interests. So, part of me was doing that whole anthropological undercover-among-the-muggles thing, but another part of me was actually quite annoyed. Because while the lecture part was interesting and even had some bits I didn't known, the group discussions? It's just - stop discussing us as if we're not already here, doing our level best to fighting our way into those jobs you don't want to retire from, dammit. Which I should probably have said out loud during the actual discussion, instead of realizing halfway to the train afterwards...

*It's possible my immediately response to that one was "Hire them!"

That is such a strange experience...
And you know, thinking of what I should have said hours later is the thing I always do. I relate.

I'm glad you could at least do that. It's a very valid point.
