I went to see Doctor Strange today.
It's okay. It's not terrible, it's not awesome, it's not the worst MCU movie I've seen so far, but I don't have any desire to rewatch it. Also, there were a lot of parts where I'm pretty sure must be a wow experience if the 3D is good, though as I watched in 2D, I wouldn't know.
Things I quite liked:
The library at Kamar-Taj, especially the restricted section. I'm not sure it's a practical design, but it's gorgeous.
There's a few nice bits of repartee between Strange and Mikkelsen's evil sorcerer character.
Benedict Cumberbatch playing Strange as an almighty asshole at the beginning (He wouldn't even help Rhodey! Bad Strange!)
And the effects are pretty gorgeous.
Oh, and now we're up to - how many infinity stones? One more, anyway.
Also, the mid-credit scene was funny and obviously leading up to Thor: Ragnarok. Not one of the best, but a little funny.
Things I didn't like:
Are you kidding me? Another fucking origin story??? (Okay, we knew that going in, didn't we? Still. I am so tired of origin stories.)
As for the whitewashing - yes, it's there, and there doesn't even seem to be any plot excuse for it. I liked Tilda Swinton's acting, she's good, and if they'd done a traditional Ancient One we'd just have had a different problematic trope. I'm not really sure Marvel could have won that fight in any way. I dunno - and honestly? The movie didn't make enough of an impact on mee to really make me care either way.
