Now, if you were to ask somebody what the national sport of Denmark is, I'm pretty sure they'd answer something along the lines of football or handball. Something like that. But really, that's just a cover. Seriously.

So, you might ask, what is the real one? It does not really have a name and is only infrequently played. Let's call it "doing-not-very-nice-things-to-the-little-mermaid".

I'm serious, you know. I think that statue has suffered more than nearly any other still existing work of art. She's had her arm cut off, she's been decapitated (twice!), she's been blown up - and those are just the nastiest incidents. Poor darling.

What brought this on? Simple. Sometime this night somebody played the sport again. The sun rose to find the poor girl covered in green paint and holding a dildo. According to the police statement the vandalism is apparently some form of statement in relation to the International Women's Day.

Whatever will they think of next...?

I've never seen that statue, not even on a pic. Strange. Poor mermaid!

Are you quite sure you've never seen a pic of the statue, because really, it's perhaps the most famous bit of Denmark. All the Japanese tourists go and take pictures of her. She's a symbol and everything. Maybe you have seen her and just not associated her with anything. I mean, she's sort of like Manneken Pis, except, well, not being a little peeing boy. I mean, in the way that nearly everybody have heard of and/or seen the statue, even if they don't really know it. Or something like that. I'm tired and no longer sure what I mean. Anyway, this page: http://hjem.get2net.dk/OSJ_INDEX/hybenrose/havfruen/eng/index.htm has got pictures of the fishy lady. If you're interested...

No, I'm quite sure I've never seen a picture of the statue or heard of it in any context before... Shame, really.
I've heard of the Manneken Pis, though. :D

Well, yes, that is true. But Gillette also pulls mermaids into his snarky commentary to Miss Swann - not very respectful, either.

He didn't? Did he? Uhm, must have missed that...

Anyway, Mer!jack might be many things, but I very much doubt him being a maid. Surely Mr. Gillette would be more of a gentleman if meeting the female of the species?
