Sorry for having been too *concise* :) I will attempt to explain myself (translation: I will rant a bit).
Well, on one hand is a very good thing women can defend themselves from unwanted assault. But the device seems to me a bit barbaric. Mind you, not for men (he who attempts a rape deserves this and worse!), but for the women who must use it. A rape cannot be foreseen, and think of going around everyday with that *thing* inside... *shudders* On a more serious and practical note, especially with respect to HIV prevention: people in Africa have already trouble in getting traditional condoms. I fear the poorest ones (who, sadly, are the great majority and also those exposed to the highest risk, both of sexual violence and infection) will never have the means to get this new (but without doubt more expensive) device.
Well, maybe the idea is that the man does not discover it is there before he really discovers it - and then he will probably have other things on his mind (like getting those hooks out of his sensitive area).
One big problem with the whole anti-rape condom idea, though, is that you would have to say to yourself: "I expect to get raped today, so I better wear this". Furthermore, due to the mechanics of the thing, you might argue that there would still be an actual rape, it would just be - how to put it - shortened somewhat...
That's a bit bizarre. I can't help thinking of the white knight, keeping a mousetrap on his horse just in case...would you wear it all the time? Just when you know you're going to be walking across dark parking lots?
I'd think mace would be more preventative. Not that revenge doesn't have it's points, but...better not at all.

Not a bad idea, though.

But I agree, it's not a bad idea.
